And it did, adding a few different dimensions to the trio’s well-oiled mind process when the four of them took to the road in the Fall of 2022 for a series of fully improvised concerts none of which was the same as any other, this recording cherry-picking the tour’s finest moments and focusing on particular details yet never losing sight of the whole framework that the musicians installed for the listener’s comfort.

LINK: https://dmme.net/kollar-cox-truffaz-raineri-live/?fbclid=IwAR0QAm6a_7WHv88P9ERHFwb5Q3Qpl5TVglJsOuwRdI-UbZ-c9_No9YMGuXY
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/73375472024-01-21T13:51:05+01:002024-01-21T13:51:06+01:005/5 on DMME CANADA!
LINK: https://dmme.net/david-kollar-echoes-of-hopeful-melancholy/?fbclid=IwAR2QEIfBYnCnAl-WNzkoY3m0d29W0SD98DIH7ph2cDbXLKEg1emCZVD6yTk

David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/73296732024-01-07T11:56:15+01:002024-01-07T11:56:15+01:005/5 On Jazzport CZ
Recenzia na album Behind the frozen Windov na Jazz port.

LINK: https://jazzport.cz/2024/01/07/nove-ambientni-skvosty-davida-kollara/
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/73280732024-01-04T08:22:20+01:002024-01-04T08:22:20+01:00Kollar/Truffaz,Cox,Raineri live on CD
Order here
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/73184802023-12-13T06:59:21+01:002023-12-13T07:00:18+01:00BEHIND THE FROZEN WINDOW ALBUM
On January 1, 2024, my new album will be released in which I read the poems of my friend Valerij Kupka. The painter Juan Antonio suggested that they listen to the guitar in the evening. I thought what would I play for a painter on an acoustic guitar without a looper, Ableton live and other effects that are part of my guitar sound. I decided to visit Barcelona and find such a guitarist and get inspired. I sat by the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and listened to a flameco guitarist. I started to think about how I would play like this on the street. I can't play classical or flamenco. I had to differentiate myself somehow. I decided to record spontaneous acoustic guitar compositions on one microphone and cable on strongly undertuned strings (In one piece is Whammy pedal).
Like I was playing on the street. After a residency in Mastelotto's Texas recording studio, David moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his already successful collaboration with sound designer Rick Cox, with whom he recently also performed in Slovakia. During his stay, in addition to presenting his original work to many first-class musicians and producers, David also managed to gain a lot of new inspiration and establish interesting new collaborations. Podcast with David Kollar
Hello friends! We have an international double-header today. First up, I talk to Mitch Galbraith, guitar player for Australian, psychedelic, yacht rock band, Ocean Alley. Their latest album, Low Altitude Living has been blowing up and they've been out promoting it all over the world including two tours of the U.S. in 2022. Go to oceanalley.com.au for music, videos, tour dates and more. Mitch and I have a great conversation about how their music is influenced by their home in the North Beaches of New South Wales, playing all over Europe and America, surfing, their songwriting process and more. After that, I talk to Slovakian, avant-garde/jazz guitar player, David Kollar who was in town making an album with legendary drummer, Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson). His incredibly unique style comes from a combo of influences including eastern european classical, jazz, ambient music techno and more. The globally celebrated guitar player has scored 18 films, won a ton of awards and he's constantly collaborating with other amazing artists. Go to davidkollar.com for music, videos, tour dates and more. David and I have a great conversation about his journey in music, pushing the guitar into new areas musically and sonically, his use of electronics and technology, his many collaborations and projects including Komara with Pat Mastelotto and much more! I had a great time getting o know both of these great artists. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down!

The best jazz album of the year
"At the beginning of the year, it is customary to take stock of the previous year. Our skjazz.sk editors would also like to take stock of the past year and one of the best ways is to remind ourselves of the best jazz albums we reviewed in the past year! Reviewer Ján Hocek also contributed his bit to the mill and here are the TOP 10 best jazz albums of the past year according to his criteria, which he reviewed for the 1st Slovak online jazz magazine skjazz.sk. The envelope was sent to me by Michal Kořán. It also contained a cover letter that La Monte Young had sent to various musicians in 1960, asking them to set the line to music. The piece is called Composition #9."

With 4’33” Cage paved the way for works such as Young’s Composition 1960 pieces, which provide one of the basic foundations for the idea to serve as the artwork by itself, with no unnecessary embellishments. Central to Young’s work is the concept of “stasis,” as opposed to “Fluxus.” “Change or flux is inevitable,” Young wrote. “Stasis, or remaining the same, is impossible. Therefore, to achieve the static state is the goal, while the state of flux, variation, or contrast, is unavoidable and thus unnecessary as a goal.” Later, Composition 1960 pieces appeared alongside works by other artists in An Anthology (1963), edited by Young, a publication characterized as “chance operations, concept art, anti art, indeterminacy, . . . improvisation, meaningless work,” and “natural disasters.” In 1960 and 1961, together with Yoko Ono, Young organized a series of events at Ono’s loft on Chambers Street that had a germinative effect on the formation of Fluxus.

Gergo Borlai and I haven't played together for over eight years. We occasionally write to each other via Whatsapp and of course I follow his very successful career. Moreover, I haven't played with the bass guitarist since 2012. I also follow Lorenzo Feliciati on Facebook. Basically, I am in his debt. Lorenzo has connected me with Pat Mastelotto in the past. I was on the guestlist of Crimson Projeckt in Warsaw. I left Pat my album The Son and he approached me with the idea of doing a band together. That's actually how Komara came about, thanks to Lorenzo."

I think when the soundtrack to Batman - Dark Knight came out. I saw a video of Hans Zimmer talking about originality. He mentioned that he was looking for musicians who were exceptional in their approach to music. I got the feeling that I could be part of Hans Zimmer's team. I had no idea how his world worked. I reworked his songs and tried to get to him somehow. A guy from Slovakia who was interested in nothing but music.

I don't know if you all know that I've been keeping a diary since 2005. Since I quit my job and stayed with my daughter on maternity leave, I have also published a book in the Slovak language. It was an important period in my life. It was impossible to go to work and be a full-time musician.

Gradually I will publish these diaries on my Sub Stack profile. I write in Slovak and I translate the diaries using Deepl translator into English. So English won't be great, but you will be able to understand my feelings and observations. I admit that I didn't know his work before. He lived a large part of his life under communism, which was characterised by endless censorship and bureaucracy. In the film, Dusan asks the question whether film can change the world for the better. My favourite director, Andrei Tarkovsky, asked a similar question.

I look forward to seeing another worthy film directed by Erik Praus, one that does not give us an answer, but asks more important questions.
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/69498002022-04-16T18:24:21+02:002023-12-10T17:46:36+01:00Diaries online!

David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/69406462022-04-05T12:25:12+02:002023-12-10T18:03:35+01:00Very limited CD edition!
Very limited edition of 25 CDs. Busy with so many things and with traveling, this book, of at least eight hundred pages (therefore heavy to carry), was in my suitcases each time. On each return, prominently on the shelf of my library. A place chosen among my most precious books. Those who filled me. The Art of Joy what a beautiful title! And yet I haven't read it yet. I started with the Notebooks and The Certitudes of Doubt. We have chosen these Notebooks to travel with you. Goliarda Sapienza's Notebooks recount certain stages in her journey, with her joys and sorrows. The exigency of his thought, the beauty of his writing, his outpourings resonate in me, and it seems to me that they echo each of us. As for The Art of Joy, knowing that her writing work took ten years for her to be satisfied with it, so no longer between two suitcases but in a sacred moment The Art of Joy will be my next recollection. Here we have a beautifully presented two CD set, which also includes the poems which form the inspiration for the first album, both in the original Slovakian and English. Kollar is of course Slovakian, and he has taken 10 poems by Ukrainian-born, Slovakian poet Valerij Kupka, and used these as the basis for music composed on a ronroco. This instrument was invented by Boliivian Gonzalo Hermosa in the 1980’s and comprises ten nylon strings, arranged in five double courses and is essentially a baritone or bass charango, about 80 cm long with a 46–50 cm scale. On this album he also provides sampling and a baritone acoustic guitar, and sometimes bows his instruments as opposed to picking them, which provides a very different tone and structure. He is joined by just one other musician, trumpeter Erik Truffaz, and then only on the final number, “A Divine Beam Descended on the Earth”. This is an album which feels both incredibly experimental and also very connected to nature, with the bowing in particular bringing a certain other worldliness to proceedings. The picking is gentle and delicate, and is something which lulls the listener in, yet at other times the music is very electronic and out there, as he uses different sounds and techniques, always very much at his own pace. The lack of percussion is also important, especially as it adds to the space within the music.

‘Crime On The Bunny’ is very different indeed, with an inspiration taken from a stuffed toy seen abandoned in a forest as opposed to a set of poems. It starts with a rock-driven punk intro which sounds as if Muse has been let in the house and is totally removed from what has gone before. It soon turns into something far more left field, with strange sounds being dragged from electric guitars in multiple different fashions. On this track he is joined by drummer Pat Mastelotto and Arve Henriksen (trumpet efx) and is totally different from what has gone before as it moves through multiple different styles where the guitar sounds like it is often in pain, far removed from the gentle picking we had heard previously. This 10-minute-long piece is followed by two shorter numbers, “Coronomorphia I” and “II”, which are again very experimental in nature as David layers different styles of owed acoustic guitar on top of each other. Neither of these in any way prepare us for the last number, “The Sound Behind The House”. This is exactly it purports to be, a 52-minute-long recording from behind his parent’s house, where he just put out a microphone and allowed us to share in the sounds of nature. I must admit this last one took the least amount of effort in terms of recording yet is something I actually found myself playing quite often stuck in the middle of the city as each time I played it, t took me home. Both of these are available separately as digital recordings, but the double digipak CD release is well worth investing in.
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/66378572021-05-23T10:04:38+02:002023-12-10T19:01:24+01:00Sonic Pulses at WeEurope jazz festival online
David Kollar & Tomas Mutina live at 20:00 /CET/ 23.5.2021

Their rather brief on-stage encounters resulted in 2018’s “Illusion Of A Separate World” which seemed to have predicted lockdowns and locusts besieging our days, and 2020’s "Crime On The Bunny" which drove it home with “Coronomorphia” – so there was nothing new for these artists in resuming remote recording and giving us another chapter of their saga. “Unexpected Isolation” is an instrumental mosaic that reflects today’s state of affairs, focusing on small details to render it all relatable.
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/65627082021-03-02T16:11:31+01:002023-12-10T19:07:15+01:00Pandemia SK serial in TV Archiv
Faunova záhrada

RTVS archív

My thoughts on some wonderful new tracks from David Kollar :
“This, then, is music which has been composed in our strange times to be appreciated in such. It further explores the idea of isolation that Kollar has done in his previous lockdown work, but I found that it actually helped to increase my psychological boundaries and explore new areas with and in my mind as the sounds of Kollar’s compositions passed through it.”
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/65247962021-01-19T16:33:43+01:002023-12-10T19:43:29+01:00New album SONIC PULSES
Music based on the use of drones, or the delays that need to be archetypal for Japan, India and Australia, spread in Europe in the 20th century thanks to minimalism, alternative rock and electronic music. But since 1958, when the American La Monte Young introduced his Trio for Strings, a lot of water has passed. Through John Cale, Terry Riley, Klaus Schulz, Brian Eno, the Biosphere, but also George Crumb and his Black Angels and Henry Górecký's string quartets, the drone has spread to contemporary progressive music. But only some can use it freshly and with extraordinary suggestion. Listen to new "coronavirus" recordings by David Kollar. While his name might not be one you know, if you have listened to Steven Wilson’s song Detonation or no-man’s tune Love You To Bits (Bit 4), you have heard his amazing guitar work.

Mr. Kollar has his own wonderful music to present to the world. His latest album is called Sculpting in Time, where the energy of those guitar solos is focused into music of a more jazzy or modern classical nature but isn’t restricted to those labels.

This album opens with the track Tendre Lundi, a flowing guitar/trumpet interplay. The first steps of the journey begin here.

The Path gives the listener a bit of dubby bass and effects paint the music. A rest stop on the journey, offering a different view of the sounds.

A bit of poetry leads off the tune Prisoner of Time, and it carries the listener into intense guitar tonality – a challenge on this audio trip that ultimately arrives to a peaceful expanse of keyboards.

The closing track, Balada for Jozef, features intercommunication between guitar and horn, a fond remembrance of what has been.

In our world, everything is connected. We may not see the threads, but they are there. Many people view music from other parts of the world as different. The bedrock is the same, all musicians just add their unique fingerprints to it.

Music is a universal that brings us together.

Mr. Kollar’s work here will capture your ears and carry them along.

I also played my sketches for Petr Popelka, a painter, who has an atelier above my studio. We were holding endlessly long academic conversations on creation and art. That's why I decided that the album cover should undoubtedly be made by him. Sculpting in Time is inspired by Andrej Tarkovsky's theory that a movie itself is sculpting of time sculptures. I perceive it similarly in music. These 14 tracks on the album are my time sculptures of what I went through last year.

Every so often I am contacted by a band/label/PR company I haven’t come across before, and am asked if I would be interested in hearing the new release by someone I am not aware of. Generally I agree, as it is one of the best ways of discovering new music, and sometimes I come away quite astounded at what I am listening to, and this is definitely one of those instances. I am probably one of the few progheads in the world who hasn’t been totally impressed with some of Steve Wilson’s solo albums, so rarely seek them out any more, so hadn’t come across Slovakian guitarist, film music composer and sound designer David Kollar, who was invited by Wilson to play on two tracks on ‘To the Bone’ and then as opening act in the European leg of his shows. King Crimson’s Pat Mastelotto also took a serious interest in Kollar’s work, and joined forces with him and trumpeter Paolo Ranieri to create the KoMaRa project in 2015. David’s other collaborators include Fennesz, Marco Minnemann, and Gergo Borlai. Mastelotto describes his style as “An interesting combination of Eastern European classical influences, jazz, ambient, techno, IDM, trippy heavy blues rock mixed with Eastern folk styles, played on a homemade guitar through a quirky combination of pedals and effects. I know critics often like to put music into categories but with David’s music that’s very difficult to do.” Here he has joined forces with Norwegian trumpet maestro Arve Henriksen: after meeting at a couple of festivals in 2017 they decided it would be a good idea to join forces, and this is the result.

Right from the off I decided not to try and work out what instrument was providing what sound, as many have been treated and changed, but instead went with the flow which is possibly the only way to describe this music, as it feels like a river full of vitality, eddies and currents, with a great deal of movement happening under the surface. It’s not ambient, or jazz, or fusion, but somehow a mixture of all these and much more. This is progressive rock in its truest sense, and while there are times when it can be very gentle indeed, there are others when a strident guitar cuts through like a scimitar through a curtain. The production of this album is amazing, with everything captured just as it should be, and the result is a wall of noise that is also ethereal and breathtaking in its audacity. Simplicity and complexity go hand in hand, and one never knows what is going to happen next. Tribal style percussion may move the music in one direction, while a treated soprano trumpet could move it in another at the drop of a feather. There are times when Arve provides some vocals, but yet again it is another musical instrument as opposed to a lead role.

Overall this is an incredible release, and I’m not really sure that I have heard anything quite like this before. It may not be to everyone’s tastes, but if you want to hear music that is both refusing to conform to any sense of normality while also breaking boundaries and being inherently enjoyable throughout, then this is it.

Henriksen played there with Austrian guitarist-sound artist Christian Fennesz and Koller presented a solo performance. On August 2017 Kollar and Henriksen performed twice together at the Hevhetia festival in Košice, Slovakia and decided to record an album.

Kollar began sketching the basic improvised parts of «llusion of a Separate World» on December 2017. He thought about these basic pieces as musical diaries, inspired from «life’s trials and tribulations or from the environment». Later Henriksen layered his own trumpet, voice and electronics over these pieces. The geographical distance did not affect the intimate spirit of this project or its haunting, exploratory soundscapes.

Kollar and Henriksen share common sonic Worlds. Their clever, delicate use of electronics and Henriksen’s fragile voice add a subtle, orchestral dimension to the gentle, ethereal soundscapes. Some of these suggestive soundscapes like «Chimera» and «Roving Observer», the latter is inspired by Russian experimental director Andrei Tarkovsky, have a profound, unsettling cinematic quality, as of a prophecy-warning about a dystopian, environment reality, passing through many barren, desolate sceneries. The spacey, sparse ambiance of pieces like «The Spiral Turn» and «Solarization» intensify the sonic perspective of watching our planet from a secured, faraway distance. Henriksen and Kollar most poetic, collaborative language is offered on «Castles in the Air» where Henriksen sings softly through his trumpet a mysterious, beautiful theme and Kollar adds atmospheric guitar lines and minimalist rhythmic patterns.

It was recorded "virtually" over the Net, by exchanging files between the two musicians, and presents twelve original pieces co-composed by them.

The music is quite difficult to categorize, as it flows freely between styles and genres. Since it also lacks a clear melodic content, it is ambient in nature and presents more moods and emotions rather than what most listeners consider as music in the straightforward sense of the idiom.

Henriksen´s trumpet playing is the epitome of Nordic music, with lyrical and melancholic themes, while Kollar´s guitar, with extensive usage of electronics, is mostly incidental, ambient and cinematic in nature. However, when combined together, these two directions amalgamate splendidly, creating surprisingly evocative statements. Although music of such nature can be quite tedious and lethargic, this album manages to avoid that trap with elegance and a continuous listening, although requiring some effort, is eventually rewarding and even inviting. It is a good example of ambient music, which one can listen to more than once, revealing new layers of musical depth with each listening session.

Kollar and Henriksen are both established musical phenomena and this album confirms their individual talents and cooperative skills, but does not offer any surprising new vistas, being more or less something the followers of these two musicians would expect to hear on the album. Nevertheless it is an elegant, highly aesthetic piece of sound-weaving, which has its faithful followers.

Na začátku léta se mu splnil další sen. Vydal desku Illusion of a Separate World s proslulým norským trumpetistou Arvem Henriksenem.

Letos jste zaznamenal velký úspěch. U slovenského vydavatelství Hevhetia jste společně s norským trumpetistou Arvem Henriksenem vydali album Illusion of a Separate World.

"Illusion of a Separate World" ist ein Dropbox-Album.

L I N K
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/53596372018-07-24T15:53:45+02:002022-05-09T18:15:03+02:00Album on Spotify and iTunes
<a contents="SPOTIFY" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="<iframe%20src=%22https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/2nX9ngMo93ZPFiHmkkHLLt%22%20width=%22300%22%20height=%22380%22%20frameborder=%220%22%20allowtransparency=%22true%22%20allow=%22encrypted-media%22>" style="" target="_blank">SPOTIFY click
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/53548292018-07-20T10:13:15+02:002023-12-10T18:07:45+01:00David Kollar and Erik Truffaz live on Hevhetia festival
Change!!!
Arve Henriksen has an acute knee injury and cant travel to Košice tomorrow.
Illusion of a Separate World is the meeting between innovative Slovakian guitarist, film music composer and sound designer David Kollar (Steven Wilson, Pat Mastelotto, Fennesz, Marco Minnemann, Eivind Aarset) and Norwegian trumpet maestro Arve Henriksen. Shimmering soundscapes and haunting melodies mixed with soundtrack music, ethnic influences, electronic explorations, jazz hybrids, and post-rock riffs are at the core of this meeting.

David Kollar and Arve Henriksen started their collaboration after they met in 2017 and played just twice before the recording. “I played last year at the Spectaculare festival in Prague,” said David “I had a solo performance and after me there was Arve playing with Christian Fennesz. At the end of the festival, we shared our contact details. In few months, we met again on the stage at Hevhetia festival in Slovakia.” The performance was such a bonding experience that the two chose to record an album together.

In December 2017, David spent a week in the city of Faenza, Italy as the guest of his fellow trumpeter and friend Paolo Ranieri. This was the perfect setting to start sketching out improvisations that would become part of Illusion of a Separate World. David drew inspiration from life’s trials and tribulations or from the environment around him. “I played them as musical diaries,” said David. Soundscapes, moody riffs and rhythmic works emerged. He recorded 17 tracks and then gave them to Arve, who layered trumpet, voice and electronics over them.

Through this joining of two unique worlds, in both geographical and cultural senses, the duo has created an anthemic album which reveals an intimate connection. It spans from the moments of quietness that slowly turn into walls of orchestral sounds like in Night Navigator, to the tribal drumming rhythms that Henriksen enriches with his voice-like trumpet in Chimera. When the guitarist transforms a simple clacking on string into a weird rhythm like in Silk spinning, Henriksen then turns it into a pastoral melody. When the trumpeter switches to his trademark soft-speaking voice, like in Mirror Transformations, Kollar places himself in a more subtle context, camouflaging his guitar in synth-like drapings. The Slovakian guitarist then takes the stage and hints at his Americana influences with a delicate guitar and trumpet solo in Solarization, that eventually morphs in an ethnic-flavored electronic experience. Suspended over Kollar’s cloudy drone, Castles in the Air is Arve Henriksen at his best, playing one of his most iconic solos. But he can also turn in some of the most intricate and haunting melodies like in the unsettling Roving Observer, which Kollar initially took inspiration from movie director Tarkovsky.

Intimate, intense, passionate and subtle, Illusion of a Separate World is two artists showing how easy is for them to create music that is immediate and tremendously complex, haunting and gorgeous at same time.
David Kollartag:davidkollar.com,2005:Post/50423902018-01-25T06:11:04+01:002023-12-10T18:01:21+01:00David as opening act on Steven Wilson tour
You may see and hear short solo concerts by David Kollar on Steven Wilson 's upcoming tour in february.

Stál vonku, opretý o stenu budovy, kde pred chvíľou dohrali, a viditeľne unavený fajčil. Koncert ho vyžmýkal, dal doň maximum. Hrali totiž niečo vyše hodinu a použili jedinú vopred hotovú – dohodnutú pesničku.

"After many months of writing and recording, I’m pleased to finally announce details of my new album To The Bone, and a major European tour in early 2018 which includes a return to many of my favourite venues, including London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall. For my North and South American fans, expect to see further tour news soon. To The Bone is due to be released on 18th August but is available now to pre-order in a variety of formats, including a special deluxe hard back 120 page book edition, which includes an exclusive full length CD of demos and unused songs, and a one-sided 7 inch vinyl single of a bonus instrumental song from the album sessions.

My fifth record is in many ways inspired by the hugely ambitious progressive pop records that I loved in my youth (think Peter Gabriel’s So, Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Talk Talk’s Colour of Spring and Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love). Lyrically, the album’s eleven tracks veer from the paranoid chaos of the current era in which truth can apparently be a flexible notion, observations of the everyday lives of refugees, terrorists and religious fundamentalists, and a welcome shot of some of the most joyous wide-eyed escapism I’ve created in my career so far. Something for all the family!
